Benchmarking in Business through Talents: Beyond the Success in Motorsports

Abstract.

In today‟s business environment, talent has become the potentially powerful source of competitive advantage. It is the fundamental building block to creating an organization which is capable of learning, innovating and changing, as well as executing new processes. It has been said that, talent management include the additional management processes and opportunities put in place for people in the organization that are considered to be talented. This paper intends to present a guide for racers to drive their companies by extending their success on the race tracks into business. This piece of work is based on the information gathered through in-depth interviews with three business owners that are also active racers. In the course of the interview, feedbacks regarding benchmarking through talent in motorsports and businesses were sought. The importance of talent management as seen through the prism of how top performers in motorsports have succeeded in driving their business while still producing impressive results on the race tracks was established in this study.

Motorsports Involvement among Adolescents and Young Adults with Childhood ADHD

Abstract

Although children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at risk for impulsive, health-endangering behavior, few studies have examined nonsubstance, use-related risk-taking behaviors. This study examined whether adolescents and young adults with ADHD histories were more likely than those without ADHD histories to report frequent engagement in motorsports, a collection of risky driving-related activities associated with elevated rates of physical injury. Path analyses tested whether persistent impulsivity, comorbid conduct disorder or antisocial personality disorder (CD/ASP), and heavy alcohol use mediated this association. Analyses also explored whether frequent motorsporting was associated with unsafe and alcohol-influenced driving. Two hundred twenty-one adolescent and young adult males (16-25 years old) diagnosed with ADHD in childhood and 139 demographically similar males without ADHD histories reported their motorsports involvement. Persistent impulsivity, CD/ASP, heavy drinking, and hazardous driving were also measured in adolescence/young adulthood. Adolescents and young adults with ADHD histories were more likely to report frequent motorsports involvement than those without childhood ADHD. Impulsivity, CD/ASP, and heavy drinking...

Motorsports Medicine.

Abstract

Motorsports is the fastest growing professional sport in the United States. Each year approximately 14 drivers die, and many others are paralyzed or seriously injured. Although there is a common misconception that motorsports medicine is analogous to standard emergency or sports medicine, due to the unique racing environment a traditional approach to emergency medical services can be ineffective and may expose drivers, spectators, and medical personnel to great danger. This article is a general review of the evolving subspecialty of motorsports medicine.

Use Of Full Engine And Detailed Valvetrain Models To Improve Valve Control In A High-Speed Racing Engine.

Abstract

Valve control is critical to the performance of high speed racing engines. Even slight errors in valve timing can lead to significant power loss and deviations from the design valve motion may affect engine life. Traditionally, valve-train designs have been optimised using simple rigid body models. At high loads, however, component flexibility leads to discrepancies between predicted and measured results. These can arise either from within each single valvetrain or from torsional effects in the full engine system. This paper describes how full engine system and detailed single valvetrain models have been used in the process of developing a high-speed racing engine. Results from the models have shown how valvetrain dynamics is affected by component flexibility and have given solutions to durability problems.

Event Classication and Relationship Labeling in Affiation Networks

Abstract

Many domains are best described as an aliation network in which there are entities such as actors, events and organizations linked together in a variety of relationships. Relational classication in these domains requires the collective classication of both entities and relationships. In this paper, we investigate the use of relational Markov networks (RMN) for relational classication in aliation networks.

From China to the World The Seed of Future Motorsport Industry

Abstract

Since the first day of motorsport history, automotive racing has been a noble sport category due to its high cost of participation. After entering the 21th century, the global motorsport industry has had a tendency to go downhill due to the economic slump. On the other hand, today’s motor racing is no longer a game simply about who is going faster, but starts focusing more on the challenge of sustainability. This strategic change requires merging varies cross-field technologies and sufficient financial support. Unfortunately, under the fragile economic status, the growth of today’s many well-developed motorsport industry participants goes into a bottleneck. In comparison to those countries that have a relatively mature motorsport industry, China shows the world a bigger potential of developing opportunities within the last 20 years. There is no doubt that the world motorsport industry will regain its exuberant vitality by the arrival of such a strong force from Asia. However, in order to diminish the obstacles of being a...

Visibility and Sponsorship Business Model in Formula 1

The visibility and sponsorship business model in Formula 1 (F1) industry connects F1 teams with firms and organizations that want to increase their visibility towards the F1 global audience. Thus, It provides to the former an additional source of income, and to the latter the possibility to globally increase their brand awareness, as an alternative of traditional commercial and advertising. This business model is possible as F1 is the most watched annual sport series in the world (500 million of viewers per year) and all teams participating the races enjoy a high level of visibility, through media, broadcasting, and spectators at the racetracks. Also F1 fans tend to support a specific team, and follow it throughout the racing season. This creates a potential value that can be monetized not only by selling merchandise, but also by promoting additional products and brand to the fans. It is important to acknowledge that, like many sports, the F1 circus is heavily influenced by sponsorship and external founders’...

Masters Thesis: Motor Sport And The Image Of A Car Brand.

Executive Summary

This thesis sets out to investigate the effect of participation in motor sports on the image of a company. The focus in this investigation lies on the effect for companies that participate in Formula 1. The research looks at three different items that can influence the image: brand fit, brand involvement and popularity of the sport. Another factor investigates the moderating effect that the influence of the image of the sport has on the three items under investigation. These issues where investigated using an online questionnaire. The results show that a correct brand fit and a high brand involvement are the issues that will ensure a positive change on the image of a company. In addition, companies need to choose a sport with a positive image in order to create an image transfer regime that is positive for both parties.

Race to the Future: The Statewide Impact of Motorsports in Indiana

Executive Summary

Indiana and the Central Indiana region in particular, are known as the ‘Racing Capital of the World.’ Traditionally, this designation exists due the presence of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the annual running of the Indianapolis 500.

In preparing this report for the Motorsports and Vehicle Production Network project, we learned that motorsports touches nearly every corner of Indiana and is indirectly responsible for over 421,000 jobs while the cluster directly employs over 23,000 individuals in the state and pays an average wage of nearly $63,000, exceeding the average state wage by over $13,000.One challenge that project staff faced is that there was no pre-existing definition of a ‘motorsports cluster.’ To address this, a compilation of company information was compiled from databases supplied by Conexus and the Indiana Motorsports Association. 172 unique 6-digit NAICs codes were obtained and the most frequent NAICS codes were processed through an input-output table for Indiana. From this we were able to identify significant value and supply...

Motorsports Exemption Vehicle Field Test | Report To The Legislature

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Vehicle Code Section 35401.5(g)(2)(A), effective January 1, 2013, mandates the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to test motorsports trucks with 56-foot semitrailers on various segments of the National Network and routes leading to the motorsports race tracks, and to report findings and recommendations to the Legislature by January 1, 2014. Five locations were selected for field investigations – four race tracks and one truck stop. The number of locations and events selected for testing was limited to five for the following reasons: (1) time constraints due to the report due date, which allowed Caltrans to collect the field data from February to August only; and (2) scheduling constraints due to the racing events being held at the selected race tracks only once per year.
